Shampoo Bar, Day 10

I had to post again today. Last night when I took my shower, I decided to try a different soap on my hair. One that I knew didn’t have any cocoa butter in it – just to see if it would make a difference. I was getting ready for church this morning – had my make-up on and half-way dressed when I started combing through my hair, and noticed this:

Sorry the photo isn't totally focused. Do you know how difficult it is to take a decent picture of the side of your own head?

Anyway, in case you can’t tell, that is another greasy spot over my left ear. Only this time I don’t think it has anything to do with the type of soap I’m using or the vinegar rinse either. I think I’m just not getting soap there, or I’m not getting it totally rinsed.

Since I was mostly ready to go, except for my hair, I decided to forego another shower and just wash my hair in the kitchen sink (with my original shampoo bar). Bingo! Check out how great it looks now:

After another shampoo and blow dry.

Moral of the story: If you’re going to wash your hair with a shampoo bar, do a thorough job of it!

P.S. If you would like to get caught up on this series of posts, just go to the list of categories on the right side, and choose “Shampoo Bars“.

  1. Amy, your hair looks great! Very shiny, and not dry-looking at all….how are you doing with the No Conditioner Issue? I’m still missing mine…

BTW, are you right-handed? If so, maybe that’s the “Left Ear Issue”? I know folks often brush their teeth too hard on the side matching their dominant hand! (Yes, I was a dental assistant in my younger days) Hope you’re having a super weekend. 🙂 -Becky

  2. @The Soap Sister – I’m actually using a bit of conditioner on the ends. It’s a base I bought from one of my soap suppliers – which I haven’t read all the ingredients in awhile, so I don’t know how much better it is than store-bought. Anyway… I am definitely right-handed, and I’ve usually got the bar of soap in my right hand when I’m lathering up. I think this is probably my problem!! Great insight!

  3. I think your hair looks fabulous (in the second pic of course ;)). The funny thing is I have had my hair do the thing in the first picture from some commercial brand hair products. That is an interesting point about the right handedness! I will have to remember all these points when I start using mine. I bet by next week you’ll be loving it! Good job hanging in there!

  4. I have been seeing so many blogs with shampoo bars on them! I will have to try one. I have really thin fragil hair though. My hair gets super oily and I can’t go a day without washing it. I wonder if a shampoo bar could really get my hair clean. I hate it when my hair gets all sweaty and oily… Just feels gross!

  5. @Ann – Thank you so much! It’s definitely been an interesting experience. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, but I’ve had a few surprises along the way. I will be happy if my experiences help others along the way – and yes, my hair has been consistently great for a few days now!

@Caitlyn – Yes, the shampoo bars are definitely making a come-back, aren’t they? You’ll just have to give it a try and see! Just be sure to commit to at least 14 days before giving up. It really is taking that long for my hair to adjust.

  6. Amy,

I had that same problem with regular shampoo awhile back and kept wondering why I had a greasy spot. Your new berry soap looks great by the way.

  7. Hi Amy,

I was wondering what you take is now on the idea of more consistently pursuing making shampoo bars after the past two weeks of experiencing the ups and downs of using them? It appears you need to really persevere and give it a couple of weeks. How effective would you say shampoo bars are and how would you describe the advantages of shampoo bars versus regular store-bought shampoo?

Thank you for sharing this shampoo bar journey. Very useful and helpful information for the rest of us!

  8. @Michael – You’ve asked some excellent questions, and I’m hoping to answer all of them in my final post tomorrow – which will be Day 14! Stay tuned…

  9. When using a soap, it tends to have rough texture unlike shampoo that is liquid or the powdered one is easy to apply. Unlike soap, you must thoroughly apply it making sure the bubbles reach every strand.

  10. But the real question is, will you continue to use the shampoo bars, switch back to normal liquid shampoo, or try something else? I have been thinking of trying one of these shampoo bars myself.
