Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild

After making soap for nearly nine years, I finally joined the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild. The Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild is the only registered non-profit trade association giving a voice to the handcrafted soapmaker. The mission of the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild is to promote the handcrafted soap industry, to act as a center of communication among soapmakers, and to circulate information beneficial to soapmakers. Membership is open to those who make and sell handcrafted soap and vendors who provide products and/or services to handcrafted soapmakers. Here are some of the benefits of being a member:

Members receive a wide array membership benefits including general and product liability insurance (if qualified), a free hosted webstore, discounted merchant services, inclusion in the Find A Soapmaker list and Soap Gallery, discounts on the Annual Conference and from Vendor Members, and more.

Members may participate in the Certification Program and once certified, may display the Certified Soapmaker logo.

Most importantly, members have the opportunity, through elections, participation and volunteerism, to shape the direction and future of the HSMG and the handcrafted soap industry as a whole. (all information comes from the HSMG website)

The annual conference will take place May 18-20, 2011, in sunny Miami, Florida, this year. I would absolutely love to go, but I figure it would cost me about $1400 to attend. So I’m already composing my answers to the scholarship application, and praying for a miracle! Are any of my soapmaking friends planning to go? I would love to meet you there!

  1. Definitely apply for the scholarship. Last year only 3 people applied, I was chosen along with another member to attend the conference in Denver. It was a great experience.

This year, it’s in my back yard (I am 1 hour north of Miami), but we are moving to NC in May/June, so I won’t be able to attend this time. But I’ll come to the next one.

I hope you get chosen. A trip to Miami is not to be missed, although I wouldn’t recommend living there. Good luck!!

  2. @Erica – Oh wow! You really know how to give a girl some hope! I’m sad that I won’t get to meet you in person just yet though – hopefully some day!

  3. I know I’m late replying Amy but I just found this post when I was looking up the Soap Guild,I’ve been meaning to join for years too and just haven’t got around to doing it, hence looking it up again:) I’m just about to join, wouldn’t it be fantastic to go to a conference? I would sooooo love that, but being in Australian, that’s very unlikely to ever happen, but hope to see you somewhere on the Guilds pages:)

  4. @Jan – It’s hard enough getting there when you live in the same country, but I would definitely love to go! Glad to hear you are joining too!
