Featured Product: Sugar Scrub

Great Cakes Soapworks Sugar ScrubSugar scrubs have recently become a popular product, but the use of sugar in cosmetics goes back a long way. Apparently there is record of a Roman empress named Poppea Sabina (the second wife of Nero) who was said to have used a honey, sugar, and milk lotion on her face as a beauty treatment in 65 AD. If you research the history of sugar, you will find that the people of New Guinea are credited with being the first to find the sugar in sugar cane that grew naturally in their area. Interestingly enough, the first sugar refinery in the U.S. was built in New York City in 1690, but it wasn’t until 1872 that a factory in California was finally able to successfully produce sugar in a profitable manner.

So why do we use sugar as a cosmetic? Because it is wonderful for your skin! Exfoliating your skin helps it renew its glow. Sugar is one of the best ingredients to exfoliate dry skin not just because it’s abrasive, but also because it contains glycolic acid, part of the chemical family referred to as alpha-hydroxy acids. Alpha-hydroxy acids work by stimulating dead cells on the surface of the skin and inside the pores so they can slough off more easily, and a new layer of skin with a smoother texture and a more uniform color can be revealed. Scrubbing your skin with sugar can initially make it turn a bit pink, but not irritated. When you are finished, you will love the way it makes your skin feel soft and smooth!

So why choose a sugar scrub made by Great Cakes Soapworks? Well, if you’ve ever tried the scrubs at one of the major bath and body stores, you know they are an oily mess. Beware of the shower that has been coated with an oily sugar scrub! Oh, and don’t forget that you have to stir an oily scrub every time you use it because the sugar has settled to the bottom.

Our sugar scrubs are different because they contain an emulsifier – the same one we use for our lotions. The result? You get the same moisturizing benefits from the oils but the sugar scrub rinses off clean. Inside the container, the sugar remains suspended in the oils so you get the same consistency every time you use it.

My favorite way to use sugar scrub is right before I shave my legs. If you’ve ever tried to shave after using an oily scrub, you know that the razor gets clogged with all the oily residue. However, after using the emulsifed scrub, the razor just glides because there is no oily residue on my skin.
