At the Olathe Farmer's Market
One of the main venues where I sell soap is the local farmer’s market. We just had our annual farmer’s market meeting last night. The one where all the vendors pay their dues for another season, talk about any new rules and regs, and have a good old time seeing our friends. Sometimes there are active discussions about things that don’t pertain to me, like the regulations for giving out samples of produce or baked goods. Or why we aren’t allowed to sell canned goods, etc. It’s a fairly small market, and the jewelry lady and I are the only ones who sell something other than food.

Produce from the Olathe Farmer's Market
Last night, however, there was a big announcement that affects all of us. The city is moving the location of our Saturday farmer’s market to a new location: the
Mahaffie Heritage Center parking lot at 1200 Kansas City Road. If you are local to Olathe, Kansas, you are probably aware of its location. It’s just a little over a mile from the original location, but all the vendors agreed that it will be a good move and we are excited about it! Not only is this a higher traffic area, but it is also more easily accessible from the east side of town. The Heritage Center was just opened this past year and was dedicated in April. There are plans for more development in this area as well.

Mahaffie Stagecoach
The Mahaffie Heritage Center has the only working stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail. There is a farmstead, and lots of special events that go on there. Because of these events, our schedule will be slightly different this year. Since July 4th is on a Saturday, the market will close before 11:00am to make room for the 19th Century Independence Day Celebration. We will be open on September 12 during Old Settler Days, but closed on September 26 for the Wild West Show and Bullwhacker Days. The first day of the market will be the last Saturday in April – the 25th – but I won’t be there until the next week, May 2nd. The last day of the market will be Saturday, October 10.

Just wondered how well you do at the market. Is that the only place you sell besides online. Do you do craft shows etc. I’m so glad your able to bring in extra money for you family by doing something you love:)

This will be my 6th year at the market, so I’m pretty well established there and do quite well. I have done a few craft shows in the fall, but none of them consistently. I love the farmer’s market best!

We have a farmer’s market here and I have never gone. It really sounds fun and a great way to not only make money but meet new people.

Oh, it’s great! You need to visit yours and get some fresh, homegrown veggies! There’s nothing like it!
