Show Crazy – A Soap Update

Between the Cyber Monday and online Christmas Sale plus several shows this week, I’ve been busy selling soap and not so busy updating my blog! The good news is that I’ve sold a lot of soap. The bad news is that I’m getting dangerously low on several of my regular soaps that I usually keep in stock!

I’ve had a couple people contact me to hold soaps for them – which I don’t mind doing. Here is my list of soaps that are getting low and/or sold out already if anyone else wants to speak up:

Clarifying Facial – 3 left
Stress Relief – 4 left
Creamy Castile – 6 left

I’m also down to one last wooden soap dish and unfortunately, my supplier is out of stock.

Black Raspberry Creme – SOLD
Winter Wonderland – SOLD

The current batch of Bayberry is almost gone, but fortunately I have another batch that will be ready soon.

Cinnamon Bun and Moroccan Spice Coffee Soaps will be available at Greatcakessoapworks.com this Monday! Frankincense & Myrrh will be ready in another week on Monday, December 13.

The online Christmas Sale is still in full swing:

End of a Season

market6 150x150 End of a SeasonSaturday was my last day at the Olathe Farmer’s Market for this season. It was my best day yet! The KEY – once again – is repeat customers. I sent out my newsletter on Friday, letting them know that it was my last one, and the ones who needed to stock up or wanted to get an early start on Christmas shopping showed up. I still have 3 Watermelon soaps left and 3 Cucumber Melon soaps which are now marked down to $4.50 each if anyone wants to get a great deal!

I still have three more events this year – the next one is on Friday at the Olathe Medical Center. It’s their 20th annual Holiday Craft Sale – handmade items made mostly by employees of the hospital. I get to participate because one of my customers is an employee, and she got me in three years ago!

I’m anticipating online sales to pick up soon as well, so I’m definitely not slowing down. This week I’m trying to take a breather and get my house cleaned. It’s been neglected far too long!

Oh, and I gave in to the temptation of the Southern Soapers inventory liquidation sale. Looking forward to trying some new fragrances soon! I even ordered some of those cupcake molds…because I need yet another project!

Farm Tour Fun

I brought my older daughter with me to Screamin Oaks Farm on Saturday to sell soap during the Kaw Valley Farm Tour. This is the farm where I buy fresh goat’s milk for some of the soaps I make, and the first time I had been a part of the event. Roxane McCoy is the owner of the farm. She was selling goat’s milk, as well as about 8-10 different kinds of goat cheese, and ice cream by the cup made with goat’s milk – banana, caramel, or cookies and cream. My daughter had a cup of the caramel ice cream – it was so yummy! But what really caught her attention most of the day was this:

My daugher with a kitten!

There were four kitties in the litter – all gray and white, and free to a good home. One little boy took one home with him, and of course, I heard every reason in the book why we should bring one home as well. But, mommy was a meanie and didn’t cave!

She also got her face painted by a very talented artist who was kind enough to barter with me for some Whipped Shea Butter. Her husband was making all kinds of cool balloon animals, etc.

My daughter also enjoyed feeding Gus the donkey, and trying to milk a goat!

This wood carver is also very talented. His name is Russell Ehart. He made the pumpkin you see on the ground, another pumpkin, a rooster, and a donkey head while we were there. He showed his portfolio to me which includes full sized Indians, busts of Elvis, Martin Luther King, Jr., John Wayne, and so much more. His largest piece is an 11-foot high rainbow trout! Very impressive!

It was a really windy day and only in the upper 50′s, so I was pretty chilly. But I did sell a lot of soap! Roxane said the traffic was more than double what they had last year. Should be fun to do it again next year!

Now THAT Was Funny!

lotion queen 300x225 Now THAT Was Funny!

My daughter is armed and ready with the sample bottle of lotion!

So, I brought my oldest daughter with me to the Overland Park Fall Festival again this year. She was a champ at offering people samples of the Jojoba-Shea Lotion! We sold out of the Almond Milk fragrance (I have more, just waiting for the bottles I ordered to arrive). Surprisingly, we only sold two of the Gingered Pear lotions! People would smell it and say how much they loved it, but didn’t buy.

My daughter then had the grand idea to give samples of the Whipped Shea Butter. We have a wooden spatula to dip in the jar, so she was putting a dab on their hands. Then an older lady came by and couldn’t hear my daughter ask if she wanted to try some whipped shea butter. So my daughter wasn’t sure what else to do, but hand the spatula to the lady so she could apply it herself. Instead she said, “Butter?” and licked the spatula clean!! I think my jaw must have dropped to the ground. I promptly came out from behind the table and explained that it was shea butter. She just shrugged her shoulders and said, “Well, I guess my insides will be healthy,” and walked on. After she left, my daughter and I just stared at each other until I busted out laughing.

That’s never happened before!

Show Time!

This week marks the beginning of the busy season for selling soap. My first show is this Saturday at the Overland Park Fall Festival. It will be packed with vendors, free concerts and kids’ activities, plus a parade and a motorcycle show. This will be my third year participating. Last year, my older daughter came with me and gave out soap and lotion samples. She was awesome!! I paid her a commission on the lotions she sold, so now she’s ready to go back this year and make some money again!

OP Fall Fest 2009a Show Time!

My daughter in front of our booth at the OP Fall Festival last year.

The following Saturday, October 2nd, I will be participating in a new event (for me): the Kaw Valley Farm Tour. I was invited to set up at Screamin Oaks Farm – the place where I buy fresh goat’s milk for soap. There are 21 farms on the tour, and the cost is just $10 per vehicle. It would be worth $10 just to visit Screamin Oaks alone, in my opinion. I brought my girls the first time I bought milk, and they had a blast! You can read about our adventures here and here. If you happen to be local to Douglas or Johnson County, Kansas, and would like more information or buy a ticket online, visit the Kaw Valley Farm Tour website.

I’ll have more shows coming as well, but these two are coming up fast! Anyone else scrambling to get products made for the holiday season?

Soaps Back in Stock

Whoopee! Hollah & shout! The Sandalwood soap is back in stock!

Sandalwood Soap by Great Cakes Soapworks

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to stamp this batch with the dragonflies. It’s just plain old soap. But it smells great! And it’s made with fresh goat’s milk. Can you believe after three years time our farmer’s market manager finally tried my soap this year? His girlfriend was the primary influencer, and now Sandalwood is one of his favorites. His comment last Saturday: “I used to think this was foo-foo stuff, but I’m telling you, I am hooked!”

The other favorite that’s back in stock is Oatmeal, Milk & Honey:

Oatmeal, Millk & Honey Soap by Great Cakes Soapworks

This is the real deal. Made with pulverized oats, fresh goat’s milk, and real honey! I ran out of the regular Oatmeal, Milk & Honey fragrance, so I added some almond and creamy vanilla this time. I think it just makes it better!

These are $5.95 each, or get the Handmade Soap Combo Deal – any four soaps for just $20!

Returning Customers are KEY.

I spent all day Friday and Saturday at a Holiday Mart hosted by A Unique Boutique. I had more sales this weekend than at any other event in the history of Great Cakes Soapworks! Let me tell you, it wasn’t because there was a ton of traffic coming through, because there wasn’t. The majority of my sales came from my returning customers.

holiday mart booth Returning Customers are KEY.

Fully stocked booth - before customers arrived

Two days before the event, the location of the Holiday Mart changed. (Something about not having working restrooms at the other facility.) I sent out an email to my customers letting them know where we were moving. I also let them know that my prices were going to be at an all-time low. Then I posted about it on Facebook, just for good measure. And they came! And they shopped! And they were happy to see me because they needed Christmas gifts!

I can tell you why there wasn’t much traffic coming through: poor advertising. It was all focused on the signs posted around the shopping area. And we were in a heavy traffic area – close to Target, several restaurants, the huge AMC Theater, and next door to a large Christian book store. However, the signs said things like “HUGE SALE” “Merchandise Mart” “SALE”. If I was out shopping, I probably I would not have stopped.

So let me just tell you – if you have a business, you better have an email list. The girl next to me selling candles was NOT having a very good weekend. And the girl on the other side of her selling jewelry wasn’t either. They both had excellent handmade products, but they both packed up early and left before it was done. Neither one had any way to communicate with their customers – but I assure you the candle girl will be starting her list soon!

Do you have a business? How do you communicate with your customers?

My Adventures at the Bank

Federal reserve bank of kansas city 150x150 My Adventures at the Bank

Federal Reserve Bank of KC

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, I participated in the first annual Holiday Mart for the employees of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. It was a bit of an adventure!

First, you should know that every time I try to find a new location in downtown KC I get lost. There are two reasons for this:
1. Downtown Kansas City is a maze of one-way and two-way streets that curve, some with bridges that separate depending on the direction you are going (in other words, you may not be able to go home the same way you came.) It’s not very logical.
2. Google apparently does not have a handle on the intricacies of this place, because I print maps from there and inevitably end up in the wrong place.

This time I wasn’t completely lost. Google sent me to the employee parking lot when I needed to be on the opposite side of the building for the visitor entrance. There was no easy way to get to the other side of the building once you got past the parking garage, but since the Bank is tall, I kept my eye on it as I made my way and eventually ended up where I needed to be.

The second adventure was getting all of my products and displays through the x-ray machine and loaded onto a cart, then getting escorted by a police officer to the conference room where the Holiday Mart was held. (I also had to send them the make, model, and license number of my van which would be parked in their lot before the event.) Serious security, people! All the vendors had to wear official name badges, and we were supposed to turn them back in at the end of the event, but I forgot mine under my coat, so here it is:

name tag My Adventures at the Bank

Yep, it's mine!

The best adventure was networking and getting to know some of the other vendors! In fact, nearly half of them are now coming to Olathe for another Holiday Mart on December 18-19 at A Unique Boutique. Nancy, the jewelry lady next to me, said we could just call it an “FRB reunion”! She was so much fun to chat with. In fact, I put in an order with her for some custom necklaces that I am excited to pick up at our “reunion” in a few weeks!

Actually, about a third of the vendors were selling jewelry. A couple ladies in particular had a really, really cool concept, and the customers flocked to their tables! Here’s why: their tables were loaded up with thousands of beautiful vintage and modern buttons, organized by color, so you could pick through and design your own wire-wrap button rings or pendants. Then they put your creation together while you wait. So cool! They had plenty of pre-made jewelry to buy or to get ideas from as well. I’m not much of a ring person, so I had them make a pendant for me. Then, as it happens, yet another jewelry lady had the perfect earrings and bracelet to match!

Oh, and I also got this fun souvenir: free money! (Is this like “Mad Money”? As in the movie that was filmed on location at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City? I haven’t seen it yet, but now I plan to!)

Shredded Money - about $165 worth.

Sales weren’t as high as I hoped – partly due to the fact that I failed to have enough of my two best selling soaps (Peppermint & Stress Relief). They sold out in the first few hours, and yes I am completely out of these at the moment. However, I sure had a great time! The employees who volunteered their time to make this event happen were outstanding. Very organized, really catered to the vendors and made sure we felt appreciated. I’ll definitely go back next year!

Fall Festival Fun!!

My daughter and I had a GREAT day on Saturday at the Overland Park Fall Festival! She was a fantastic sales girl! First, she handed out soap balls with my business card in little ziplock bags. I must have brought at least 100 of them, and she had them all passed out in the first hour and a half. One of my customers suggested that she offer lotion from the tester bottles, so I let her do that next. She was selling lotions left and right! I paid her a commission on those, which she promptly spent before we left.

She is already asking if she can come to the next event! I’d have to say yes, considering I made 42% more this year at this event than I did last year. Part of that had to do with a better location, but I cannot deny that it also had to do with my eight-year-old daughter making sales!

Here she is at the beginning of the day:

Fall Festival Tomorrow!

fall festival31 Fall Festival Tomorrow!I’m almost ready for the Overland Park Fall Festival tomorrow! My tent is set up, and the tables and a few other display props are already on site. I just need to finish packing up products and make a few signs. Last night I set up my entire display in the living room – because I’m never quite satisfied with how it looks. This time, I think it’s going to be great! I invested in some new tablecloths and a couple of rugs at Bed, Bath, & Beyond this morning. It’s supposed to rain in the middle of the night, so if it’s too soggy, the rugs won’t work. But, I promise to take pictures tomorrow!

I will have several quantity discounts:

4 Jojoba-Shea Lotions for $28
4 Lip Butters for $10
and my usual 4 Soaps for $20

I’m also giving a great deal on matching Jojoba-Shea Lotion & Soap – just $12 for both! I have Almond Milk, Black Raspberry Creme, Jasmine Rose, Lavender Meadows, and Stress Relief – because the Black Raspberry Creme and Jasmine Rose soaps are now back in stock.

AND, one more new thing: I have some really beautiful wooden soap dishes! I might be adding these to the website after this weekend – if I have any left.

My older daughter is going to come help me and hand out soap balls to people. She will be very good at it too! Just not sure how long an 8-year-old will want to be Mommy’s little helper, so we’ll be bringing along some books.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Is anyone else doing craft shows or festivals?
