Girls’ Rooms Project Update

I’m almost embarrassed to tell you how long I’ve been working on the girls’ bedrooms. You can find the original posts under Project Week – two years ago! The final step was that they needed bedside tables. So last December my hair stylist donated a couple of matching tables for our cause. They are pretty great structurally, but needed to be stripped and painted. I finally finished stripping them about a month ago. Today we pulled them out of the garage and my husband helped me finish the job.

Notice all the “power” tools? It really does pay to be married to a general contractor!

The tables came with some really cute pewter drawer pulls – three butterflies, three frogs, and three dragonflies. Here are they are in their final destinations:

My younger daughter’s room has also been transformed since the last time I showed it to you. She no longer wanted pink – her latest desire is for everything to be blue. So we went from this:

Project (FINALLY) complete! And now, I need a shower before we go out to watch the fireworks… Hope you all have a safe and happy 4th!

SOAPing with a Friend

My friend Summer came to visit me over the weekend. We first met in 2005 when she was living in Olathe, and she came to my booth at the farmer’s market to buy soap. It wasn’t long after we decided that we were going to be really good friends that she and her family had to move away. We try to get together at least once a year, but a full 18 months passed since the last time we saw each other. Her one request was to be able to go to the farmer’s market with me while she was in town.

Me and Summer at the Olathe Farmer's Market

We did some other fun stuff too – including making soap! Summer has been buying soap from me for six years and had never watched me make soap before, so I decided to take full advantage of the situation and made her my official assistant as a SOAP Panel member.

First, we got out the bottles of fragrance and I had her tell me her impressions of the scents. Her comment was “this is harder than I thought!” – to which I fully agreed.

SOAP Panel Fragrances

Here are her comments: (you can see my comments here)
#1 – Buttercream with a hint of citrus – orange julius type (she likes)
#2 – Lemon cleaner
#3 – Sweet… (likes)
#4 – Berry – maybe blueberry? (dislikes)
#5 – Wassail-like…some floral notes?
#6 – Juicy Fruit; chewing gum
#7 – Alcohol (dislikes)
#8 – Warm, winter-type scent

I showed her how I make soap:

Then I let Summer give it a try:

Summer took photos of each cup of soap right after we mixed in the fragrance:

Reactions of each fragrance in the soap

Here is what we observed:
#1 – Turned bright yellow initially, then mellowed to tan. Still smells like orange julius, but the butter note has disappeared.
#2 – No discoloration or acceleration – Still smells like lemon cleaner!
#3 – Turned lemon yellow – Still smells really good – tropical fruity
#4 – No discoloration or acceleration – Mellowed nicely in the soap. Still a tart berry fragrance, but not so in-your-face.
#5 – Turned very light yellow – Smells citrus-y and a little bit floral. (Summer takes back her comment about the wassail-type smell.)
#6 – Turned golden yellow – Still reminds Summer of chewing gum. Maybe that’s what I smell too, but I still can’t put my finger on it.
#7 – Accelerated and heated up, but no discoloration!! (Summer loves this one now – she says it smells like a warm, cinnamon twist, and I would have to agree! It’s a very nice bakery scent.)

SOAP panel f SOAPing with a Friend

Fragrance #7 set up fast, then immediately started to gel.

#8 – No discoloration or acceleration – this one smells like tart green apple to me. We compared it to a Green Apple fragrance that I had in my stash, and Summer liked that one better than this one. However, I say if this truly is an apple fragrance, it was a breeze to work with! I’ve never had an apple fragrance that didn’t want to seize and that didn’t morph.

Here are all the soaps after they were poured and set up:

I’m really loving all of them, but I’d have to say my favorite scents are #1, 3, and 7. Just wish #7 would have behaved! I was expecting it to turn color, but it really has stayed a nice creamy white. If I had to pick, I’d say my least favorite would probably be #2.

Thank you, Brambleberry! We had fun!

For my next experiment, I’ll have to go it alone. I had to take Summer back to the airport this morning. Very sad. But I’m planning to add the fragrances to my Hand & Body Lotion base and see how they smell on the skin. Gotta love the experiments!

Unusual Easter

It’s an unusual Easter weekend. We are doing all of our celebrating and churchgoing today! Easter Sunday will be a much-needed day of rest – and possibly some egg dying and hiding them around our yard.

Today was the opening day of the Olathe Farmer’s Market too – that was pretty unusual as well. We’ve never had a farmer’s market on Easter weekend before! There aren’t many vendors with produce available yet – just one with a few radishes and asparagus. However, the vendor next to me got a permit and permission from the city to sell meat this year, so in addition to farm-fresh eggs and homemade bread, they have pork and chicken too! The vendor on the other side of me is selling her hand-painted garden rocks and some plants, and there’s another vendor selling flowers and plants, and a couple other bakery vendors.

My hubby made a new lip butter display for me in time for the new season. I wanted something that would be more of a focal point and get them up at eye level. I think he accomplished that! Check it out:

In case you were wondering, the Soap of the Week is Jellybean. (I renamed the Fruit Loops – figured Jellybean would be appropriate.) There are just three left. All the kids who came by really loved these! So colorful and fruity! You can grab up the last ones at Greatcakessoapworks.com. I’ll have a new Soap of the Week next Saturday for my local customers, and if there are any left, I’ll offer them in the same place next week.

Well, it’s time to go to church for the carnival and egg hunt. I get to supervise a bounce house for the first shift, then I’m going to help serve beverages in the Grace Cafe right before the 5:00 service tonight. That will be a new role for me!

Pastor Tim is preaching on Psalm 22 – the wonderful way that David portrayed Christ’s crucifixion 100′s of years before he came to this earth. Can’t wait to chew on that one!

Wishing you a wonderful, blessed Easter!

Soaps From Tierra Verde

When my soapmaking friend Michele of Tierra Verde Soaps announced that her new web store was open for business, her Creamy Coconut with Lime and Clove soap just begged me to buy it. Here’s the official description: “Coconut milk provides a luxurious creamy froth of lather while fresh limes meld with a lashing of exotic dark patchouli and just a hint of clove. This scent is fresh with a hint of sultry.” I was intrigued by the coconut milk as well as the scent. It’s exactly as she described, and my hubby really likes this one also!

I already knew Michele was the generous type, so I shouldn’t have been surprised that she sent me two samples of other soaps I had been drooling over as well! The first one – my absolute favorite – is the Orange Honey Drizzle with Oats. She calls it “breakfast for your skin.” Isn’t that clever? Now, usually when you have an all-natural orange scented soap, the fragrance isn’t all that strong. Not so with this one! I don’t know how she did it, but the orange and the honey scent are both fantastic!

The other soap sample is called Fresh Air. It’s a combination of evergreen and peppermint that I love! The evergreen isn’t sharp like some can be – it’s just reminds me of a walk in the woods with a cool breeze.

Needless to say, I’m a huge fan of Tierra Verde Soaps! Michele has a 10% discount going on right now for her grand opening sale too – what a deal!

Friday Night Fun

Last Friday night, my girls and hubby got all spiffed up for the Daddy-Daughter Dance at school. This was the first time our school has hosted such an event, and the girls LOVED it. We started shopping for outfits and shoes several weeks in advance, then it was my job to do hair the night of the event. I gave hubby his usual buzz, and the girls got their hair curled.

Wish we could have taken some outdoor photos, but the weather was really nasty that night – it had been cloudy and rainy all day, and then the temperature dropped near freezing!

I had plans that night too – since I volunteer with the middle school class at church, I went to a Girls Night Out at Amore Chocolate Pizza with some of the middle school girls and their moms. Very yummy chocolate fondue, and one of the moms was sharing a piece of her chocolate pie with everyone which was absolutely divine! They had a karaoke machine, so the moms and girls had some fun with that.

I realized later that every single one of the moms (and the youth pastor’s wife) in that group has bought soap from me – one of them made her first purchase that evening. How cool is that?

Rice Krispy Valentines on a Stick

I signed up to bring the Valentine take home treats for my daughter’s 4th grade class. Not knowing exactly what we were going to make, we came up with these tasty Rice Krispy Valentines on a Stick!

You’ll Need:
6 tablespoons of butter or margarine
8 cups mini marshmallows (a little more than one bag)
1 cup white chocolate chips
8 cups rice krispy cereal
neon pink food coloring (or red)
heart-shaped cookie cutter (ours is 3″ wide)
“skinny stick” craft sticks (we found some at Walmart)
one bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips
decorating sprinkles
Valentine ribbon
treat bags

Directions:
In a microwave-safe bowl, heat butter, marshmallows and chips on high for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. We had to use a couple more short bursts to get the chips to melt. Next, add food coloring until it turns a medium to dark pink. We didn’t add enough. You have to remember that the rice krispy cereal is going to dilute the color quite a bit, so when it looks like the color you want, add a bit more!

Stir in the rice krispy cereal until well coated. Using buttered spatula or wax paper, press mixture into a jelly roll pan (larger than a 9×13!) coated with cooking spray. Without waiting for it to cool, cut out heart shapes with a cookie cutter coated with cooking spray. (Tip: If you take the excess and keep pressing it together, you can make more heart shapes):

Next, take a “skinny stick” craft stick (the flat sides give the gooey stuff something to hold on to), place it part way up between two hearts, and really press them together. Be sure to pinch the edges as well. Fortunately, they are pretty easy to mold at this point:

Then, start with about half the bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips and melt them in a small glass bowl. Give it about 30 seconds on full power in the microwave and stir until smooth. Spread it with a spoon on one side of the treats. Add some sprinkles while the chocolate is still warm:

Finally, after the chocolate sets up, you can tie some Valentine ribbon around the sticks:

Super Bowl Sunday

Our family doesn’t get too excited about the Super Bowl. It’s just an excuse to invite a few friends over, eat junk food, and hang out. We have no ties to any particular team (which I have to say softly since there are so many die hard Chiefs fans around here), so we usually end up playing cards instead of watching the game. Of course, the commercials are usually the best part of the game, and since they’ve already released the best commercial on YouTube, I thought I would share in case you haven’t seen it yet:

She’s Seven and a HALF

She's seven and a half!

My girls’ birthdays are exactly two weeks apart, so they get to celebrate them pretty close together! Because they have summer birthdays, the school allows them to celebrate their half birthdays while school is session. Yesterday was my younger daughter’s turn to celebrate. She asked for a Happy Meal for lunch, and ice cream sandwiches for her classmates.

After lunch, her teacher brought her up to the front of the classroom and they sang “Happy Half Birthday” to her. The class gets to celebrate Miss Nelson’s half birthday on Monday!

Today, we checked to see how much she’s grown since her (real) birthday in August. Someone needs to put a book on her head, because she’s grown 1 1/4″ in the last six months!! She’s still half an inch shy of the 54″ mark – the ultimate goal so that she can ride The Patriot roller coaster at World’s of Fun. I’m sure she’ll be there by the time summer begins!

The Best Kansas Day Celebration Ever!

The state of Kansas is 150 years old today! I was invited to demonstrate old-fashioned soap making at Eisenhower Elementary School at Fort Leavenworth for their Kansas Day celebration yesterday. I had no idea what to expect, but I was just blown away by the wonderful displays, demonstrations, and hands-on activities for the kids! There were tables set up in the gym for the demonstrators, as well as live animals outside. Everyone was encouraged to dress up in period clothing – including the kids!

There were about four different shifts throughout the morning as different classes came through the gym. The kids were on their own to explore the exhibits and demonstrations, so as interested kids came by my table, I told them about how soap was made “back in the day”. I wish I had some of the old fashioned equipment to bring with me like some of the other exhibitors, but I had to bring pictures instead. I didn’t think it would be a good idea to actually make soap on site since the lye can be rather dangerous to work with.

Kansas Day1 The Best Kansas Day Celebration Ever!

My Soapmaking Exhibit

I talked about how they needed three ingredients to make soap: lye, water, and fats. I had a picture to show how they collected wood ash and put it in a big hopper and poured water over it to make lye. I brought a bowl of water and a potato and talked about how the potato would float when the lye was strong enough to make soap (it sunk to the bottom of the bowl in the plain water). I brought a small container of lard and talked about how they got animal fats for the soap from butchering pigs and cows and let the kids smell the lard. I had a picture of a lady cooking soap in a large black kettle over a fire and talked about how they needed to add some salt to the soap to make it hard like the bar of old-fashioned lye soap that I made. I also brought some of the modern “soaps” that we use today – bath soap, facial soap, shampoo, shaving cream, dish soap, and laundry soap – to demonstrate how they had to use handmade lye soap in place of all of those.
