Happy Resurrection Sunday!

Yesterday our family spent some time doing yard work together, dying Easter eggs, and having an egg hunt – with the plastic eggs full of candy, or course! We even went to Walmart to buy the oldest a new bicycle and helmet, and passed hers down to her younger sister. They were both ready for larger bikes, and it was a beautiful, sunny day for bike riding.

Today is for reflecting on Jesus. What a gift He gave to the world! It is worth far more than candy or bicycles. It is worth more than a sunny day… It changed the course of history forever. It changed my life. I wonder if you know Him…

That’s My King!

I’m Not Cool

I had a conversation with my baby girl (who will be six in August) two days ago. It was one of those sweet moments where she was snuggling up next to me as we were sitting on the stairs, and I was telling her that she would be a teenager before too long and wouldn’t want to have anything to do with me. She denied this, of course, precious thing that she is. So then I asked:

“Do you think Mommy is cool?”

She got this funny look on her face and sort of snickered. “No.” (Like, are you serious?)

“Why not?”

“Well, you’re fun. But you’re not cool.”

“Really? What would it take for Mommy to be cool?”

Snickering once again: “You would have to be a kid!”

There you have it. I’m no longer cool. And unless I’m Benjamin Button, I never will be again. *sigh*

Handmade Natural Soap

Lavender Meadows Soap by Great Cakes Soapworks, a favorite since 2005

Handmade natural soap has been available from Great Cakes Soapworks for over four years now. I registered my company with the Kansas Department of Revenue on January 11, 2005. Before that, I was selling my soaps under the business name of Amy’s Handmade Soap for about a year. There is something about milestones that make me reminisce a bit. Back when it was Amy’s Handmade Soap, I remember a lady who bought soaps from me at the farmer’s market for her granddaughter named Amy. In fact, I remember my first Saturday at the farmer’s market, selling just four kinds of handmade natural soap on the old card table that my neighbor had let me borrow, covered by a simple plastic tablecloth. There was a sweet farmer selling his vegetables next to me who suggested that I leave some soaps out of the wrappers so people could smell them. Genius! And then I couldn’t believe that people would actually buy my handmade soap!

But they did, and they continue to. The recipe for my handmade natural soap has been tweaked quite a bit since those first four batches. No more vegetable shortening or canola oil. Now I stick to rich olive oil for its conditioning properties, coconut and palm kernel oil for their hardness, shea butter, apricot kernel and rice bran oils for their moisturizing and conditioning, and castor oil which actually provides more lather. I’ve discovered some higher quality fragrance and essential oil companies since then, and developed new scent blends. One of the best ingredients I’ve discovered for handmade natural soap is fresh goat’s milk. The lather is super creamy and moisturizing for the dryest skin. I believe the healing properties of the goat’s milk is also retained in the soap.

If you are looking for some truly wonderful handmade natural soap, I highly recommend checking out Great Cakes Soapworks: dedicated to creating beautiful cakes of handmade soap that are gentle and moisturizing, richly scented and luxurious. Besides, we’re not just soap – you will also find some wonderful lotions, Dead Sea products, lip butters, and more!

Stay tuned for the next post – a trip down memory lane! I will have three soaps by Great Cakes Soapworks from years past. Whoever can identify them will win a prize! I’ll probably give some hints…

A Little Vacation

I’m taking a little vacation the next four days. I get to visit my friend Summer in Ohio! She’s one of my very best friends, and if I didn’t have a soap business, we never would have met. Summer bought some soap from me at the Olathe Farmer’s Market in 2005, and ended up coming to my Christmas Open House later that fall. At the Open House, we got to know each other a little bit and realized we had quite a bit in common. She started coming to the women’s Bible study at my church and we became really good friends – and so did our kids – as we started spending more time together.

Then a terrible thing happened (in my point of view, of course). Summer’s husband graduated from seminary and they moved to Ohio in June 2006 so that he could be a youth pastor there. Now, we’ve stayed in touch with each other and even took our family vacations together in Florida in August of 2007. Our last shindig was our girls weekend in Petersburg, Illinois last April. Good times. However, since then Summer had a new baby girl in June and I am so excited to meet her! So off to Ohio I will go. If you behave while I’m gone, I’ll show you a picture of her baby when I get back. Oh, and maybe it will be time for another giveaway too.

Go See Fireproof!

fireproof1 150x150 Go See Fireproof! My husband and girls and I went with some friends to see “Fireproof” at the movie theater yesterday afternoon. Wow. It was amazing! This is the third film produced by Sherwood Pictures out of Albany, Georgia, and they keep getting better. Fireproof stars Kirk Cameron (yes, he’s the one from Growing Pains!) who plays Caleb Holt, one of Albany’s fire captains. He and his wife Catherine are heading toward divorce, and Caleb’s dad offers him a “Love Dare” to help him try to rescue his marriage. You will laugh and cry – and no, this isn’t just a chick flick! Have a date night and go see it with your significant other. You won’t be disappointed!

Another Birthday Girl

bday girl 150x150 Another Birthday GirlMy baby girl turned five today! Her birthday is exactly two weeks after her sister’s. She chose to have her party at McDonald’s, and I must say it was really great! The kids had a fabulous time, and I got to relax and take lots of pictures. Ironically, all the local McDonald’s had run out of birthday cakes, so the manager had to make a run to Walmart!

For our family celebration, Baby Girl chose macaroni and cheese with hot dogs in it for dinner this evening. We rounded out the meal with some baby carrots and fresh watermelon. I baked a confetti cake just like her sister’s and she chose my favorite ice cream to go with it: cookies and cream!

It’s been a fun day, but I’m ready for bed!

The Birthday Girl

b day7 150x150 The Birthday GirlMy oldest is seven today! One of our birthday traditions is to measure how much she’s grown on her growth chart. She’s a full 52 inches, but she can’t wait to be 54 inches so she can ride The Patriot (roller coaster) at World’s of Fun. Thrill seeking is a trait that comes from her dad, not me!

It hasn’t been the best birthday today…her little sister is still running a fever and has pink eye on top of that, so we had to postpone the party with her friends for a few days. Such is life. We will still celebrate this evening as a family, and she will get the special birthday plate loaded with cheese pizza, her choice. And there will be presents!

My New Camera

canon s5 My New CameraYes, I finally decided on a new camera – the Canon PowerShot S5 IS. After using my husband’s camera (the S2 version) to take pictures at VBS, I decided it was pretty workable for me.
baby 150x150 My New CameraI’ve only used the new camera a couple of times, but I had to post my favorite picture of my friend’s baby. Lindsay asked me to take a few shots for their birth announcements. Isn’t she the sweetest thing?
green beans 150x150 My New CameraOf course, I’ve also taken a few of my family. My husband and the girls were snapping TWO gallons of green beans the other night that were gifted to us by one of his customers. Right after he had just bought a huge bag of them from Sam’s Club. Oh well. They sure are yummy!

I will be taking some more pictures of the new Bamboo & Teak soap that will be available this weekend, but for now I thought I’d share some fun ones!

The Big TV

big tv 150x150 The Big TVWe have a new addition in our basement as of yesterday. My husband got a really great deal on this monstrous 60″ flat screen TV in the clearance section at Sam’s Club. He wanted to surprise the girls and me, so he “tricked” us into going to the pool yesterday afternoon while he “mowed the yard.” Mowing the yard was just one of his projects, however. I discovered it first by accident, and tried to show some enthusiasm. He still wanted to show the girls, so he told them he had a big surprise and we all shuffled down the stairs for the grand unveiling. My six-year-old’s response: “Dad, that’s not a surprise. That’s just a TV.” The four-year-old gave the classic girl response: “Why did you get a new one? The old TV is still good.”

Poor guy. He should have known that girls just don’t share the same appreciation for oversized electronics.
